The Alice Washburn Awards are named for the distinguished, self-taught Connecticut designer and builder of the 1920’s, whose work is known for her thoughtful, stylistic, and programmatic invention. Focusing on style, these awards acknowledge excellence in traditional house design through the thoughtful adaptation of tradition to address 21st-century needs. 

Jury Comments: A lovely restoration that brings this period house back to its glory, but updated to contemporary tastes of light and details. Updates to the HVAC system and existing insulation contribute to sustainability. A seamless rehabilitation.

Fine Homebuilding magazine’s annual HOUSES Awards celebrate the most well-designed and well-built homes in North America. Every year, hundreds of homes are considered for recognition in six award categories as well as the Reader's Choice Award. Together, they offer a snapshot of the most progressive design ideas and construction techniques being executed by today’s top architects and builders.

LOWEST OVERALL HERS INDEX & LOWEST ANNUAL NET OPERTATING COST 2013

The Energize CT Zero Energy Challenge was a program that provided incentives and recognition for builders constructing zero net energy homes. Completed homes were assigned a performance score based on the presence of energy-efficient features that curb overall energy use. Specifically, the challenge used RESNET rating standards to determine each completed home's HERS index. The home's HERS index, coupled with other factors including the cost effectiveness of the project and the home's total estimated energy use, were utilized to determine the winners.

Jury Comments: Nicely proportioned and detailed, with a floor plan very good for modern living.

AWARDS OF MERIT 2011, 2016, 2019

The Guilford Preservation Alliance (GPA) is a non-profit group whose mission is to preserve and protect the built and natural heritage of the town of Guilford. Incorporated in 1980, the GPA has been active in promoting the preservation of the diverse buildings, landscapes, and streetscapes that contribute to the quality of the town of Guilford.

The Award of Merit is presented to commend the sensitive restoration or creative re-use of an existing building or structure of historical or architectural significance or for a new building demonstrating particular sensitivity to its surroundings.

Awards of Merit have been presented in recognition of the Diastole Wealth Management renovation, One Broad Street, and the Daniel Hubbard House project.

EMERGING ARCHITECTURAL FIRM 2009

The Emerging Professionals Award honors emerging architects and recent graduates who have demonstrated exceptional, innovative contributions to the architecture profession. It recognizes those who have excelled not only within the discipline but also through exemplary service in the public realm, advancing both the field and the communities they serve. The award celebrates creativity, leadership, and dedication, supporting the growth and impact of the next generation of architects. The emerging architectural firm award is a biennial peer recognition program that highlights AIA Connecticut member firms that are gaining recognition in the general design community through a body of built work and continuing commitment to design excellence.
